NEW YORK PRESS COMMENT

U.S. CANNOT AFFORD TO BE INDIFFERENT (Rec. 10.0) London August 28 The New York journal “American ’ in an editorial on lend-lease says that the country cannot afford to be indifferent to Britain’s serious financial plight. Britain, without adequate assistance, will have to resort anew to drastic foreign trade and exchange controls and perhaps currency depreciation. This would hamper the post-war revival of trade and investment throughout the world. Moreover, the weakening of British politics influence due to economic difficulties would be a blow to democracy throughout Europe. Reconstruction aid will perforce be granted on a non commercial basis as Britain is unable to pay a large sum for interest and sinking fund.
