MAPUA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The August meeting of the MapuaMahana W.I. was a very well attended and active one. Mrs Tait occupied the chair. The motto for the month was: “The first hour of the morning is the rudder of the day.” The roll call brought forth recipes of “favourite tea dishes.” After the regular business had been put through the rest of the afternoon was taken up with working for UNRRA. A great many knitted squares had been brought by members, and some were busily occupied sewing these together for coverlets, while others opened the many pareels of clothing which had been brought in to be sent away through the Lady Galway Guild. These proved to be a very satisfactory collection of good quality, containing a fair percentage of new garments. Some small repairs required were attended to, and a list taken for the Lady Galway Guild, totalling 129 articles. In the midst of all this industry a welcome and enjoyable cup of tea was dispensed. The competitions for the month resulted as follows:—Plate of wholemeal scones. Mrs S. Thomas 1. Mrs Cheync 2, Mrs Blanchett 3; oven cloth from sugar bag, Mrs S. Thomas 1, Mrs Cheyne 2, Mrs Blanchett and Mrs S. Thomas 3: premier bloom. Mrs Hogg 1. LADY GALWAY GUILD The Mapua-Mahana branch* of the Lady Galway Guild has been very much occupied of late in the receiving, repairing and dispatching of warm cloth ing to be forwarded through CORSO for the use of UNRRA in the countries devastated by war. Two consignments have already been sent from Mapua, the first of 134 garments and the second of 166 garments. These include rugs, quilts and coverlets, cot blankets, etc. A similar sized consignment has also gone direct to Nelson from the Mahana members of the branch, who were unable to get down to Mapua to the sewing bees. A gratifying feature has been that so many of the secondhand articles were practically as good as new while there was a fair number of brand new things. The work still goes on, and further contributions will be welcome.
