THE GODWITS

(To the Editor) Sir—ln Captain Sanderson's letter which appeared in Saturday’s issue he does not deal with a single one of the main points which I raised in my previous letter. He discreetly refrains from accepting my challenge and he does not attempt to justify his action in making his ridiculous threat of prosecution to the Collingwood Progress League. He simply abandons all his talk about legal proceedings and would no doubt prefer that we should forget that he ever mentioned the subject. He leaves unexplained his objectionable use of the word “alleged.” The all important question whether the godwits would be any more liable to extermination than are the mutton birds he does not venture to discuss. The burden of his latest letter is the unjustifiable suggestion that I did not know or had forgotten that godwits were protected and that Farewell Spit was a sanctuary. I was, of course, well aware not only of these facts but. also of the fact that protection of birds j and Sanctuaries is not irrevocable for all time but can be removed by the I same authorities that imposed them, l Any application for the lifting of proj tection from the godwit would call for ; careful investigation of all the facts. In | the meantime I should have failed in I my duty had I left unmentioned any j potential source of wealth for the disj trict. I am, etc.. THE COMPILER | Nelson 27th August.
