POTATOES IN SHORT SUPPLY

WET WEATHER AFECTS CHRISTCHURCH Christchurch, This Day Because of excessive wet weather potatoes are in extremely short supply on the Christchurch market and, unless the weather improves, the position is likely to become serious. This was the general opinion of merchants consulted to-day. Buyers of table potatoes have been limited this week to half a sack by merchants who hold supplies, while no more than 711 b. of seed potatoes will be sold by merchants to any one buyer. Merchants stated that large shipments of potatoes were being made to the Pacific theatre. Those contracts, it was said had been entered into at a time when the Canterbury crop was expected to be good. Since that time the excessive wet weather had stopped digging operations and many crops had rotted in the ground. Others were water-logged and it was expected that losses would be heavy. The quality of potatoes was expected to be seriously affected.—P A.
