AMENDMENT ADVOCATED

MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS ACT Auckland, April 20. Amendments to the law under which actions may be brought against counties, cities, boroughs. harbour boards and other local bodies, were advocated by Dr. E. P. Neale, secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in evidence to-day before the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government. He quoted the Municipal Corporations Act lo show' that legal steps had to be taken within two months of the cause of action in the case of harbour boards and five months in the case of other local bodies. In England the time allowed was six months. It seemed unfair that local authorities should have six years to bring actions against members of the public while members of the public had only five months and in the case of harbour boards only two months to bring actions against local authorities. "The chamber contends.’ concluded Dr. Neale, “that all parties should be on the same footing in such matters, more especially as local authorities are already in a strongly privileged position in the eyes of the law in that in general they can be half liable only for errors of commission and not errors of omission.” —P.A.
