MATURING BEAUTY
He sate his orchard bloom and blow Like falling flakes of petalled snow And said, “All loveliness is brief” But even as he spoke the sun Bestowed its blessed benison Upon the miracle of leaf, While deep within each calyx stirred The promise erf the living word Which issues from the secret root. Spring knows the word—and summer too — A word forever old and new And clothed in flesh of autumn fruit. Harry Elmore Hurd, in the “Christian Science Monitor.”
