NEW ZEALANDERS MEET STRONG RESISTANCE
(Rec. 10.10 a.m.) Rugby, Sept. 29. A Rome correspondent reports further British gains in heavy fighting halfway from Rimini to Cesena. New Zealanders advanced two miles along the coart beyond Bellaria to encounter strong resistance just short of the Fiumicino river. Canadians further inland are across the Fiumicino, having established a small bridgehead west of Sannauro. Fierce fighting is in progress as the Eighth Army advances west from Savignano. The British advance from Canonica was met by coun-ter-attacks and there has been hard fighting in the Monte Albano area. FIGHTING AT CALAIS (Rec. 1.45 p.m.) London, Sept. 29. It is understood that the Germans at Calais refused unconditional surrender and after a ten hours’ armistice—requested by the Germans in connection with the evacuation of civilians—fighting has begun again. The stronghold of Cap Gris Nez was captured and considerable numbers of prisoners, also eight large cross-Channel guns, taken. THREE FIRST AWARDS Mr H. Pike, of Nelson, was a successful exhibitor at the Hutt Valley Kennel Club’s show. His Irish Setter, “Redwood Johnny” won three first awards and a third prize.
