GOLDEN BAY FOOTBALL
VISIT BY RIVAL TEAM On Saturday the residents of Golden Bay had the pleasure of seeing the Rival. Rugby team from Nelson play a combined Takaka-Collingwood team at Takaka. A team from the Rival Club had not visited Golden Bay since 1905. The Bay team was composed of young players who revealed great promise and* the Rival players, who were without several of their best backs,, had to fight hard to keep the score as even as the final result turned out to be—Bay 14, Rival 10. From a line out, Strange secured and scored for Bays. The kick failed. Bay 3, Rival 0. Rivals replied with a strong attack, and with a penalty kick hit the upright. E. Riley found the line for Bay. but Sundboi’n, with a good run, scored. Burns converted. Rival 5, Bay 3. Bay immediately attacked with good forward play and Strange scored again. The Bay backs next secured the ball and from a good passing rush F. Papps scored a try. The kick again missed, and half-time sounded with the score Bay 9. Rival 5. On resuming the Bay forwards carried the play into Rival territory and only sound defence kept them out. Finally E. Riley, the winger, scored after a strong run, and he also converted. Bay 14, Rival 5. Rival then kept the Bay on the defence and finally, from a good forward rush. Tear scored under the posts and S. Riley converted. Rival 10 Bay 14. Mr R. J. Papps controlled the game. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a dance organised by the Old Girls’ Basketball Club.
