U-BOAT COMMANDER CAPTURED

(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) Rio De Janeiro, July 4. Survivors of a ship torpedoed by a U-boat have arrived at a Brazilian port accompanied by the commander of the submarine that sank her. They explain that after the torpedoing the submarine surfaced and the commander stood on the deck photographing the ship. A United States patrol plane suddenly appeared and the submarine crashdived, washing the commander overboard. The survivors pulled him 0 n to the raft and brought him to port, where he was handed over to the Brazilian authorities. —P.A.
