AUSTRALIA’S NEEDS
OFFICIAL IN DOMINION To obtain seeds, mainly of peas and beans, for greater production needs in Australia, Dr J. R. A. MacMillan, of Canberra, an executive member of the Australian Vegetable Seeds Committee, is visiting New Zealand. Owing to the increased demand for vegetable seeds in New Zetland, Dr McMillan said yesterday that he was not hopeful of getting the quantity he originally anticipated. Dr McMillan said that during the past few years Australia had set out to produce most of her own requirements in seeds, but there were number of varieties she still had to import from overseas, including New Zealand. Much higher production was at present called for on account of the war, for Australia was supplying large quantities of vegetables not only to her own forces but also to those of the United Nations. To relieve the present demand a big campaign had been conducted to induce greater home production of vegetables and thus allow market gardeners to concentrate more on supplies for the forces.
