TRIBUTE TO PROVOST COMPANY
WORK AT EL ALAMLIN FRONT ADDRESS BY GENERAL FREYBERG (Official War Correspondent N.Z.EF.J Cairo, Jan. 11. Appreciation of the work and operations of New Zealand's Divisional Provost Company in the battle of El Alamein and in the campaign which followed was expressed by General Freyberg when he addressed the personnel of the unit just before a new phase of operations on which the New Zealand ers are now engaged. General Freyberg was accompanied on the inspection by Major E. W. Hayton, assistant Provost Marshal of the Second N.Z.E.F. General Freyberg congratulated Major Hayton and the officers and n.c.o.'s of the Provost Company upon the high standard of efficiency attained in the recent campaign. “All my commanders agree with me that the suci cess of the two phases of the action and j the subsequent movement of the divisI ion depended largely upon two factors j of vital importance—the w’ork of our | sappers in clearing gaps in the mine- | field defences for the advance of our forces and the provost for lighting the I way,” said General Freyberg. “Make no mistake about it—we are proud of our provost and the work they do.”
There would be work of an equally important nature in the impending operations, said Freyberg. H*e expressed firm confidence in the successful accomplishment, not only o# that task, but of the whole objective.
