FRUIT PRICES FOR NEXT SEASON

REQUEST FOR INCREASE TO COVER PRODUCTION COSTS Representatives of the fruitgrowing industry this week met the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) and the Minister of Marketing (Mr Barclay) in Wellington to request an increased price for next season’s apple and pear crop. Mr L. B. Robinson, who returned to Nelson to-day, said that' the representations were made by the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation directorate. They were given a cordial reception by the Ministers and a candid discussion took place. The deputation stated that last year's average price of 5s 3d per case was totally inadequate and asked that next season’s price be equal to the cost of production. As both the Stabilisation Committee and the Price Tribunal may have to be consulted Mr Robinson said that at present no definite statement could be made at present.
