POSTHUMOUS AWARD BY PRESIDENT (Rec. 11.20 a.m.) New York, Nov. 24. President Roosevelt presented posthumously the Congressional Medal of Honour to Captain Richard Fleming for extraordinary heroism in the Battle 0 f Midway Islands, on the first day of which Captain Fleming’s plane was hit 179 times. When the squadron leader was shot down Captain Fleming led the division with such fearless determination that he dived his own plane to 400 feet before releasing a bomb. Finally Captain Fleming’s plane was hit and fell in flames into-the sea. White House invited Captain Fleming’s mother to White House to receive the medal.—P.A.
