COUNTY ROADS

“ GRADING PLANT REDUCED MAINTENANCE COSTS “Roads have been kept in good repair during the year, and generally speaking. the running surfaces have been good,” stated the annual report of the • Waimea County Council chairman » (Councillor J. Corder). “It is noticeable, however, that in certain parts of the county some deter- * ioration is now occurring. This is to some extent due to the petrol shortage the removal from the roads of one of the council’s grading ‘plants, and the consequent re-arrange_ '.Stent of the grader districts, and also jjghrough the shortage of suitable labour difficulties in carrying out adequate 23r:eta lling. Thp reduction in motor traffic on rapMs which normally carry a compara. - iSi*ely small volume of traffic has very ‘tittle effect on maintenance costs, . though on the roadS and main highways formerly subject to heavy traffic wear some saving has occurred, and these roads are in good order at present. SEALING WORK DEFERRED “Bitumen, which was ordered early in the year, did not come to hand, and ; the sealing of a section of the Apple-by-Jubilee Bridge main highway in ' 4ront of the Mapua school and on the “Motueka-Kohatu main highway in front of the Tapawera school had to be postponed. The sealing of the Umukuri road, Riwaka. on which it was hoped to secure a subsidy, has also been deferred. The sealing of a short section of six chains in front of the Waimea Dairy Coy. factory, was carried out partly with material from stock.”
