UNITED NATIONS’ DAY
HUGE WELLINGTON PROCESSION Wellington, This Day. United Nations’ Day was celebrated in Wellington by the biggest military display ever seen in the city. Favoured with glorious weather the parade through the city began at Thorndon, thJ Governor-General. Sir Cyril Newall. taking the salute near the Citizens’ War Memorial. The first section consisted of marching troops, air force and a naval detachment, and a representative group of the Merchant Navy who included Lascars in native d»ess. A number of bands was distributed through the long column. Following came an impressive procession of mechanised weapons and transport, including artillery, tanks and Bren carriers, the whole extending approximately 20 miles. The organisation of this great movement required the closing of the Hutt road and other highways to ordinary traffic for several hours. Flights of bombers and fighters flew several times over the city. The event caused almost a complete cessation of business. An enormous crowd thronged the route through the city, but all had an excellent view because of its extent.
