RABBIT ISLAND PLANTATIONS WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL’S VALUABLE ASSET For more than 20 years the Waimea County Council has been building up a valuable asset in (be pinus insignis plantations on Rabbit Island, where an area of 1858 acres has now been planted. The following figures give the areas which have been planted since operations commenced: 1921, 19 acres; 1922, 32; 1923, 93; 1926, 30; 1927, 10; 1928, 8; 1929, 5; 1930, 40; 1931, 222; 1932, 600; 1933’ 250; 1934, 209; 1936, 180; 1937, 160. Total, 1858 acres. “The plantations on the Island are all doing well.” stated Councillor J. Coi'der, chairman of the County Council, in his annual report to-day. “Fire breaks which were becoming covered with fern have been satisfactorily ploughed and roughly levelled. The Rabbit island Committee is now considering various proposals to effectively control the growth of fern and maintain the (ire breaks in their present clean condition.”
