NO FOOD FOR TROOPS
DEPARTMENT’S EXPLANATION Hamilton, Oct.. 21. Referring to the statement that recruits proceeding by train to join the tank brigade at Waiouru had been unable to secure refreshments at Taumarunui early on Friday morning, Mr J. S. Seoul lar, stationmaster at Frankton Junction, said to-day that the Thames Valley men had a hot meal at Frankton Junction at 8.30 p.m. prior to joining the train for Waiouru. The train left at 10 p.m. and the Waikato men had ample time to procure a meal before leaving their homes. Mr Scoular added that the Auckland office of the Railway Department asked the Army Department if the men would require refreshments en route between Frankton Junction and Waiouru. The Army replied in the negative and stated that the men would not be permitted to leave the train between th . two stations named. They were due to arrive at Waiouru at 4 a.m. on the Friday, and would be given refreshments on arrival. —P.A.
