TAKAKA W.N.R.

ACTIVITIES REVIEWED PATRIOTIC STREET DAY TO BE ORGANISED The Tukaka branch of the Women’s National Reserve held its October public depot meeting recently, when despite inclement weather, there was an attendance of over 80 members and several apologies for absence were received. The president, Mrs O. E. R. Page, occupied the chair. A motion of sympathy with a mem- [ ber, Mrs A. 11. Rose, in the loss of her home by lire was carried. The treasurer's statement showed that income for the month had totalled £BS 7s 7d, of which amount £76 had been paid in to the patriotic fund. Since its inception in June, 1940. the branch's receipts totalled £llO6 15s 4d and of this sum £IO6B 5s Id had been paid in to the patriotic fund. Expenditure to date was £29 His 7d, including £24 3s lid expended on wool and new materials. It was explained that receipts for the past month included a | donation of £42 3s lid, representing the net proceeds of Wadsworth’s staff ball. The staff of Messrs E. C. and E. M. I Wadsworth, Ltd., was accorded a ! hearty vote of thanks for its generous donation. It was announced that Miss Tola Ellis had accepted the position of leader of the Correspondence Group in succession to Miss M. Feary. The president drew attention to the fact that there were several ladies who had done a great deal of work lor the W.N.R., but who had failed to enrol as members on the official forms and whose names therefore did not appear on the membership roll. Mrs Page requested all persons who might be in that position '■< fill in the official forms obtainable from the secretary <Mrs W. G. Gibbs) or the treasurer (Miss D. Goodwin) and thus ensure their participation in all W.N.R. activities. ARTICLES MADE BY HAU S( IIO' L CHILDREN An interesting feature of the meeting was the exhibition of articles made by infant pupils of the Hau School. These were obtained by the president from the t acher at the Hau School (Miss Edna Kelly) and patterns were made available to W.N.R. members. The articles included beautifully-made dyed sugar-bag aprons, oven cloths, pixie do’ls and cloth animals. Many of those present took patterns with the object of manufacturing similar articles for sale at the big street day to be held next month. It was reported that four large cases of goods had been forwarded to the Lady Galway Guild depot in Nelson for overseas despatch. The proposed street day was discussed and preliminary arrangements put ir. train. The date chosen was Saturday, 15th November, and the function is to include a wheelbarrow derby, stalls and a barrow parade. The barrows and decorated vehicles loaded with saleable goods are to take part in a procession in Commercial street. Light luncheon is to be served and the afternoon 'n'.v i up with a grand community sing and concert. Members were reminded that arrangements would be completed for th** street day at the next public depot meeting on 13t.h November and asked in the meantime to make a districtwide drive for saleable goods of all descriptions. Members were also asked to lend their support to the street stall oil 31st October, the R.S.A. concert on sth November and the Labour Party’s ball o.i 27th October, the proceeds of which will be paid in to the W.N.R.’s patriotic fund. Proceeds of the stall conducted during the afternoon totalled £1 17s. SOCIAL AND DANCE The W.N.R.’s Entertainment Committee held a successful social and

dance in the Masonic Hall on Friday evening. The cold, wet night militated against a large attendance, but for the fair crowd which attended the evening proved most enjoyable. Games and competitions organised by Mrs J. Davies were interspersed with dancing, while W.N.R. members provided an excellent supper. Mrs Val Page played the music and Mr T. Couper an extra. The M.C. was Mr C. W. Strickland. The net proceeds were £6 Is 6d. It was announced that the committee intended running a Friday night dance on 31st October.
