AWARD OF MILITARY MEDAL

M\V ZEALANDER’S COL'KAUE (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service) Cairo, Oct. 11. The Cominander-iri-Chief of the Middle East, General Sir Claude Auchinleck. has approved the immediate award of the Military Medal to LanceCorporal Herbert Padlie, of a railway operating company, New Zealand Engineers, for gallantry on Bth July, 1941. Corporal Padlie. it i . seated, was a military escort accompanying the engine driver on the engine of a train which was attacked on the Western Desert line on the morning of Bth July. His action in applying the brake to bring the train to a standstill and subsequently in instructing the officer how to complete the operation and shut off the steam which his own personal strength did not permit him to do while suffering from at least four body wounds, showed courage of a high ord and devotion to duty .
