MAPUA-MAHANA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

_ The October meeting of the MapuaMahana Women’s Institute struck a wet *• day, and a small attendance resulted, but a homely little gathering was held and enjoyed by those present. Delegates were arranged for the federation meeting to be held at Ngatimoti, Mrs Price kindly undertaking to take those who could attend.. A sample Institute calendar was exhibited by ” the secretary. This is useful as well as - ornamental, and contains gardening notes for each month. It was announced that members j would be welcome to attend the W.D. ! F.U. meeting in November, when Mrs | Hercus was to give a demonstration of j bottling in cold water. The secretary, Mrs Wakefield, reported that there was | only half a pound of the knitting wool ' left available, the rest of the 121bs recently received having been taken out jby willing knitters. A considerable | number of tray cloths, balaclavas, etc., j were received ready for despatch. It : was decided to try to obtain wool fo? j knitting sox for a local soldier now a , prisoner of war in Greece. A lady ' had volunteered to do the knitting if : wool could be procured. A proposal to inaugurate a ‘Country Library” centre at Mapua was introduced. some names being given in to join up if the scheme materialised. The j educational value of this service is 15 i inestimable, and it is highly desirable ! that the proposal be heartily encouragi ed. The roll call for the meeting was ‘a . household or first aid hint.” and was well responded to. The motto was “never fish for praise, it’s not worth the bait.” Two competitions were held. In one. a Victorian posy, the winners were Mrs Perry ]. Mrs Nash 2. Mrs Boyd 3. The other was “some- ! thing new out of something old,” with Mesdames Nash and S. Thomas (equal ) 1. Mrs Perry 2 and 3. A demonstration of smocking was R ; given by Miss Walter, who had kindly F | taken the trouble to prepare a nuir<E j her of pieces of material beforehand, so that each member could attempt the work for herself. This practical method of teaching proved very successful and Miss Walter received hearty thanks from those present. The competitions for next meeting are to be “Three mixed blooms.” and “jar of jelly”; and in addition a delayed one. “knitted article from twq skeins of wool.” The competitions are being 1 well patronised, with some keen rivalry 2 j and very fine work exhibited. 2 | Afternoon tea added to the friendly 2 | sociability of the occasion.
