PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING
ATKINS DEFEATS CORBETT Wellington, This Day. In a professional wrestling bout, crowded with action in every round. Fred Atkins, the Australian champion. : beat Joe Corbett, the American, by two j I falls to one. in Wellington last night. The Australian scaled 17.5 and the i American 16.10. Atkins has gained the , reputation of being the “bad man” of ! the New Zealand ring this season, but. i the gong had no sooner sounded to start ] hostilities last night than, to the delight I j of the well-filled house, it. was appar- ! ent that two “bad men” were on the ] warpath. Corbett started off with a batter/' of elbow-jolts and flying tackles, which completely stole the Australian’s, thunder. Both men exploited a wide' ] variety of holds, and moved cxception- | ally fast for big men. Not infrequently ; the pair went hurtling through the ropes in their impetuosity. The referee had a lively time breaking illegal holds, and once he was badly tangled up in an Indian deathlock, but managed to kick himself clear. MEEHAN AND SINGH DRAW Auckland, Sept. 22. A professional wrestling contest between Pat Meehan, America, and Jaget Singh. India, resulted in a draw, each man obtaining a fall. Singh gained the first fall in the fourth round with a submission to his Indian deathlock. Meehan evened the falls in the seventh round with a body press after he had connected to his opponent's chin twice in succession with drop-kicks. It was a bright and spectacular bout.—P.A.
