SOCIAL AND DANCE AT TAKAKA

MISS M. AYLWARD FARE WELL ED Prior to her recent departure from Takaka to take up nursing duties at the Auckland Public Hospital. Miss Margery Aylward, daughter of Dr. and Mrs Aylward, was entertained at a social and dance arranged by Mesdames J. H. Small and O. E. R. Page. A very large crowd, indicative of the young lady’s popularity in the town and district, attended, and the hostesses who had arranged for the use of the Oddfellows’ Hall supper room, found it necessary to transfer the function to the main hall. Proceedings opened with the National Anthem, and games, competitions, items and dancing made up an enjoyable programme. Items were contributed by Mrs A. C. Thurlow. Miss A. Thomas and Mrs J. Roche (vocal solos), and Mrs P. H. Matthews (pianoforte solos). Accompaniments w ere played by Mesdames V. Page. P. II Matthews, and O. E. R. Page, the latter also organising and compering the concert and social part of the programme. Miss Aylward was presented with a handsome reading lamp as a token of esteem, accompanied by good wishes, and further donations to the presentation fund received after the function have since been forwarded to her in the form of a postal note. In making the presentation, Mrs O. E. R. Page said Miss Aylward wa- foil nving ir. the footsteps of the pioneer of nursing, Florence Nightingale, known as “The Lady of the Lamp,” and it was fitting that her departure to enter such a worthy profession should no marked by the presentation of a similar token. Miss Aylward suitably replied and was accorded musical honours. Dancing, with Mr Geo. Nalder acting as master of ceremonies, and to music supplied by Mrs V. Page, occupied the latter part of the evening. Mrs Matthews contributed an appreciated extra. The supper arrangements were supervised by Mrs J. 11. Small.
