RAID BY HEAVY BOMBERS
PALERMO IN SICILY SHIPPING AND HARBOUR TARGETS , (Rec. 2.0 p.m.) Rugby, Sept. 9. An R.A.F. Middle East communique reports that heavy bombers of the R.A.F. successfully bombed shipping and the harbour at Palermo in Sicily on the night of 7th-Bth September. Many direct hits were obtained on sheds, main jetties and the dry dock causing explosions and a large fire was visible twenty miles away. One direct hit on the north jetty caused debris to be thrown high into the air. Near the fire station further fires occurred. On the return journey our aircraft machine-gunned a coastguard station and railw'ay sheds at Licata. Reconnaissance revealed that a merchantman torpedoed in Syracuse harbour by the Fleet Air Arm on the night of lOth-llth August now has its stern under water. R.A.F. to-day raided Derna and Capuzzo and S.A.A.F. bombed Bardia. All of our planes returned safely. A Cairo comunique states that in the Tobruk area there was some exchange of artillery fire. Our patrols again penetrated deep into the enemy position. Several light enemy bombing attacks resulted in negligible damage. In the frontier area there is nothing to report.—B.O.W.
