PRESTIGE MOVE
COMMENT IN BERLIN ißec. noon.) London, Sept. 9. I The occupation of Spitzbergen is described in Berlin as a typical prestige j move obviously aimed at stiffening the | Soviet’s back. Germany has little in- | terest in Spitzbergen economically and : British justification for the step taken j I is to prevent Germany from using the > | coal mines. A number of Free French officers and ! i other ranks arrived with the Norweg- j ! ians from Spitzl argen. It is expected | most of them will join the Free French I forces in Britain. It is officially stated that the strength | <•' the Vichy forces in Syria at the s gning of the convention was 27.000, I of which number 13.000 have since j I joined the Free French. —U.P.A.
