DEFENCE EXPENDITURE

TEN PER CENT. INCREASE IN L’.S. New York, Sept. 8. The “New York Times” Washington correspondent says the United States defence expenditure reached 1,172.000,000 dollars m August, nearly a 10 per cent, increase on July. At the end of August the entire programme amounted to 56,357.000,000 dollars. with British orders making a total of 60.016.000.000. Exports of war materials in July were valued at 69,000,000 dollars, compared with 48.000,000 in June. Of the gain 11.500,000 dollars represented fighters and bombers.—U P.A.
