UPHOLSTERY FROM NEW ZEALAND i PIG’S HAIR J A use for the apricot, peach and 4 cherry stones thrown away at New Zea- j land’s fruit canning factories is suggested by the Imperial Institute, London. * The factories have been put in touch « with manufacturing chemists in Eng- i land, who can use the kernels for mak- j ing fixed and essential oils, similar to i those obtained from almond kernels, j and worth from 3s 9d to 10s 6d per lb. J The fixed oils are used in the manufac- I ture of cosmetics, in pharmaceutical | preparations, and for culinary purposes, t and the essential oils for perfumery and 4 for flavouring in confectionery. The j kernels can also be used ns a substitute i in making almond paste and for maca- 1 Australian fruit kernels now being J shipped are fetching 80s per cwt. for 1 apricots and 55s for petches. When the j kernel is taken away, the shells can be 1 used for charcoal to produce activated i carbon. The Imperial Institute has also given 1 j advice about the use of hair from New i T Zealand pigs, worth from 36s to 46s per , 4 cwt. The hair can be used in furniture i J and automobile upholstery, for insula- 1 tion and as a building material. Ready 4 purchases of both these products have ] been found by the Institute, whose work I it is to advise Empire producers on the ; economic value of raw materials. Dur- 4 mg the past year, the Institute's Plant « and Animal Products Department made * reports on 212 samples and dealt with ■ 1.666 other inquiries from thirty-three ; Empire countries, while the Mineral Re- ' sources Department examined 1.884 f samples and dealt with 1,715 inquiries. ;
