HITLER METHODS
[To the Editor! i Sir. —One is amazed at the intention | of the Government to amend the Soc- ] ia.l Security Act in such a way as proI posed in order to compel the doctors Ito work under the scheme, and t.o do ! iway with private practice. How ini ••insistent such a measure is compared | with the democratic principles for which ••in Empire is now lighting—principles | f liberty, justice, and freedom for the • udividimi, of which we hear so much ! from our Government. How can there j l o unity and co-operation for which they ask, when they themselves are [bringing about such a measure which | compels the members of one of the j most honourable professions to a form of serfdom? The fault of the failure to carry out the scheme lies with the Government. They practically entered into a scheme with the public, many of whom did not seek it, without obtaining the consent of one of the principal parties, and because that party ob- • eted. after refusal of their own offer, • hey are to be subjected to treatment .*i though they were children or worse. It is another step nearer Hitler methods against which we are fighting. It is certainly not the freedom as understood by Britishers, and it is to be hoped that wiser counsels will yet prevail, and that we may be spared an Act which is so contrary to all our ideas of justice and liberty for which Old England has fought, and is now so magnificently fighting, and do not let i: be said that New Zealand is the only part of the British Empire prepared to lake away the liberty of the subject. There is such a thing as fair play and justice to all, be he watersider, merchant, mechanic, or doctor. —I am. etc., F. J. JOHNS. Tahunanui. 9th Sept.
