RAILWAY MISHAP
GUARD’S VAN DERAILED DEPARTMENTAL INQUIRY Taihape, Aug. 6. The derailment of the guard’s van of a north-bound train near the Mataroa railway station last Friday evening was the subject of a departmental inquiry at Taihape. Evidence was given by soldiers on ! the train and by the driver, fireman. I guard and others concerned. 1 The guard’s van was dragged about ( a mile after the bogey wheels left the rails before the train was stopped, according to one witness. The Welling-ton-Auckland express was held at Taihape for about one hour while the track was cleared. The principal ■ damage to the derailed guard's van was broken axle boxes. The scene of the mishap was inspected by the visiting railway officials this morning and. the inquiry started immediately after lunch. It lasted into the evening.
