ENCIRCLED RUSSIANS ANNIHILATED HUNGARIAN TROOPS REACH THE BUG ! ‘Rec. 12.35 a.m.) London, Aug. 5. A special German communique states: “German forces in the Smolensk enclosure yesterday continued the annihilation of the encircled Soviet forces. 1 Russian troops using some tanks made a final desperate effort to break out i but collapsed under the German fire. Fnem.v forces encircled and confined in a small area in the Ukraine failed in attempts to break through and were partly wiped out. “During an extension of the front 63 miles south-east from Smolensk we carried out a surprise attack on a new formation of enemy forces and partly encircled and partly destroyed them.” A Hungarian communique says: “Hungarian troops reached the river Bug. Operations are proceeding according to plan.” CAPTURES B 1 RUSSIANS Figures ot prisoners and war material captured are still growing. The Moscow radio describing the destruction of the 253rd German infantry division stated that 2250 officers and men were killed and 24 field guns. 29 mortars. 47 lorries, 90, motor cycles and also the division’ supply train captured. Five hundred Germans were killed during the rout of the 11th mechanised regiment.—U.P.A. s
