RIWAKA WOMEN’S DIVISION
SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY PARTY A very enjoyable birthday party was held at the Valley Pavilion on Saturday afternoon by members of the Riwaka Women’s Division, in celebration of the 10th birthday of the branch. Mrs E. Sparks (president) expressed pleasure at the large attendance of .members and friends, numbering fifty, and extended a cordial welcome to Mcsdames C. F. Skinner and G. Stuart King also representatives from other branches. An attractive programme of games competitions and items provided excel - lent entertainment throughout the afternoon and a delicious afternoon tea : was dispensed. . Mrs F. N. Drummond was the winner of the “Musical Aprons," Miss Barlass the “Ant” competition while Mrs Weir annexed the prize for “Riddles." Two recitations "Vive La France” and "The French Peasant ’ were contributed b.y Miss Beatrice King and an Irish Jig and tap dance by Miss Noeline Hickmott, who also sang “Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon." The birthday cake, Mrs Sparks explainer!, would, on this occasion, be raffled and the proceeds be donated to the Patriotic Fund. Later in the afternoon the president announced that the cake had realised the sum of £3 2s and that Mrs Ingram was the winner. Mrs L. Inwood (president, Motueka Women’s Division) wished the Riwaka branch continued success in the years to come and congratulated Mrs Sparks on being elected vice-president of the Nelson Provincial Executive. 1 Mrs L. Fry (president, UmukuriBrooklyn i extended congratulations to ; Riwaka on its attaining its tenth birth—- : day and best wishes for the coming j Speaking on behalf of the Motueka Women's Institute Mrs S. Low proffer—- ! ed congratulations and birthday greetings from the Institute. A telegram conveying good wishes was received from Mrs Pavnter, who is at present in the North Island. Mrs K. J. Holvoake, who is leaving Riwaka next week, was presented with .a handsome tray in appreciation of her work for the Division. Mrs Sparks, who made the presentation expressed regret at Mrs Holyoake’s impending departure from the district. Mrs Holyi oake —a past president of the branch — had been keenly interested in its activities, and all wished her happiness in her new home. Mrs Holvoake suitably returned thanks for the gift and the ; kind thoughts that had prompted it. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and j the National Anthem concluded a happy ! afternoon. MEETING OF TAKAKA BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the j Takaka branch of the Women’s Division held in the Rest Room on Thursday | afternoon, the president. Mrs J. H. j Small, presided over a very good atten- | dance of members. She had pleasure. !she said, in seeing present an old memi her, Mrs H. Stent, who would be welcome back in the Division. A motion of condolence with Mrs C. Manson. a former member, in her recent bereavement was carried in silence. The president gave an interesting account of her trip to the bominion conference held in Wellington and a resume of the proceedings: for which she was accorded thanks. Mrs Small expressed the hope that all members would apply themselves diligently to memorising the W.D.F.U. song. Competitions resulted as follows: Best sponge, Mrs H. Homan. 1: Mrs C. Wilkinson. 2: best bloom. Mrs H. Homan. 1. Next month's competition will be for the best snapshot of Takaka scenery. An enjoyable meeting terminated with the serving of a dainty afternoon ‘ea by the hostesses. Mesdames P. Gibbons. A. H. Rose and Tl. Homan.
