LOSS THROUGH AIR RAIDS London, July 9. J Speaking at the annual meeting of I the Royal Empire Society, over which he presided, Major-General Sir Frederick Sykes, M.P., said that in two raid? in the spring their new building suffered grievous damage, but a substantial portion of it was soon in use again. The damage had resulted in a heavy loss of income, and their most cherished possession, the library, had been seriously crippled. With the approval of the president, the Duke of Connaught, the council had resolved that an appeal was inevitable if their work for the Empire was to be effectively carried on. The immediate need was to fill the gap between increased current expenditure and income diminishd by the inevit- * able decrease of earning capacity.
