JAPAN’S APOLOGY ACCEPTED
BOMBING OF U.S. GUNBOAT FULL INDEMNITY PROMISED ! j Washington, Aug. 1. The Assistant Secretary of State, Mr Welles, announced that Japan had promised an investigation of the bombing 1 of the United Stales gunboat Tutuila at Chungking and full indemnities. The incident was now closed. The Japanese Ambassador, Admiral Ncmura, had expressed official regrets and given an ‘ assurance that all precautions would \ bo taken against a repetition of the in- ! V cident. The Tokio correspondent of the As- r sociated Press of America reports that £ the Japanese Foreign Minister. Vice- c Admiral Toyoda, offered his apologies 1 and expressed regret to the * United States Ambassador, Mr Grew. J c The seriousness with which the ’ c bombing of the Tutuila was viewed i j in Tokio was indicated by the fact that r the Japanese Government imposed a j blanket ban on messages regarding the i r incident for many hours. This was i i lifted only after Mr Grew had pro- t tested three times and telephoned C Washington asking that an uncensored i r account be issued there.—U.P.A.
