OBITUARY
MR SIDNEY ROWLING WELL KNOWN RIWAKA RESIDENT , The passing of Mr Sidney Rowling at the age of 71 years removes one of Riwaka's best known and most highly respected residents. Ilis sudden death within half an hour of returning home from a walk on Monday afternoon came as a shock. Air Rowling was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Edward Rowling of ‘Riwaka. Mr Rowling senior was one of the first settlers in the district to : grow hops, and deceased was probably the first resident to plant a commercial apple and pear orchard. Besides being a successful orchard ist and hopgrower Mr Rowling in later years grew annually a large area of tobacco. He had a keen appreciation of sport and in his younger days was a member of the Riwaka Football Club, the Brooklyn Tennis Club and for many years a keen supporter of cricket as an active and administrative member of Tlie Riwaka Club. He was the donor of the S. L. Rowling Cup, for junior cricket, which is competed for' annually by the Alotueka and Waimea | Associations. Air Rowling was an enthusiastic fisherman, particularly sea fishing, and spent much of his leisure time in recent years in making trips down the Bay to Tonga where he had a bach and a launch. It can be said that Kaiteriteri owes much of its popularity to the late Air Rowling, who realising the possibilities of this particularly attractive piece of foreshore worked untiringly for a number of years for its establishment as a seaside resort. In this respect he has been remarkably successful for to-day Kaiteriteri is known to earnpers and holiday makers all over the South Island. Mr Rowling married Miss E. Ed- j wards, daughter of the late Mr William Edwards of Lower Moutere. Of a 1 family of seven, three daughters and two sons are left to mourn their loss. These are Miss Maureen Rowling i (Stoke). Miss Margaret Rowling, (Auckland), Airs W. Polden (Riwaka and Alessrs Gordon Rowling (Riwaka). and Athol Rowling (Tahuna). There are also five grandchildren. Airs Row- j ling predeceased her husband seventeen years ago. Mr Rowling is survived by three brothers—Messrs W. E. Rowling (Riwaka'. F. Rowling (Sydney), and P. Rowling (Auckland), and two sisters— Mrs C. Dimmer (Lower Moutere) and Mrs R. Atkins (Alotueka). The funeral which took place on Wednesday, was largely attended and the many beautiful floral tributes placed on the grave at the Riwaka Cemetery showed the esteem and re- j yard in which the late Mr Rowling was i held in the district.
