GALLANTRY AWARDS
GEORGE CROSSES AND MEDALS Rugby, June 17. Corporal Wyllie. of the Royal Engineers. a member of the bomb disposal squad that removed the giant bomb from St. Paul’s Cathedral, was decorated by the King with the George Cross at an investiture held this week at Buckingham Palace. An official account of Corporal Wyllie’s gallantry spoke of his “intern** energy and the example he set his comrades." The King asked him, “How long did it take the squad to get the bomb out?" “Three days. Your Majesty.” replied Corporal Wyllie.
At the same investiture the King decorated Lieutenant Richard Moore. R.N.V.R.. with the George Cross, for gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty. In addition to these two men. the King decorated eight women and 196 men with the George Medal. Most came from the civil defence services and police, but there were numbers of the three fighting services and the Home Guard.—B.O.W.
