TURKEY AND GERMANY

POSSIBILITY OF AGREEMENT DISCUSSED IN LONDON (Rec. 10.35 a.m.) Rugby, June 18. The possibility is being discussed in London of an agreement between the Turkish Government and the Germans being signed within the next few hours. It is realised that the Turkish Government has been under steady pressure from the Germans for some months past to conclude such agreement, and that resistance to such pressure has steadily reduced the scope of the Nazi proposals. The British Government has been kept fully informed by the Turkish Government throughout the discussions, and there is every reason to believe that the Turkish Government will fulfil its definite promise to include in the preamble a passage specially safeguarding Turkey’s contractual obligations with other countries, which would necessarily include the AngloTurkish treaty.—B.O.W.
