The local hockey championships were continued under the best of conditions at the Botanical Reserve on Saturday. STORE’S BETTER FINISH In their first appearance Stoke showed better finish to defeat Waimai by 4 goals to 1. The Stoke team included several young players, but the team promises to develop into a good combination. Waimai were often knocking at the goal, but just failed to bring off good movements. For the most part Stoke were pressing, but Waimai had them worried when the Stoke goal-keeper failed to clear a long shot by Patterson, and Canning, following in, almost scored. The ball went over the backline and Waimai were granted two corner hits. They held the play in the Stoke 25 for a spell, till Stoke broke through and Norgate tried a shot unsuccessfully. In a melee soon afterwards Gribble scored. Stoke 1. Waimai 0. Immediately Stoke rushed play to the other end and a shot hit the side of the net. The second half saw Waimai try hard to get through, just failing through lack of finish. A keen attempt by Patterson was unsuccessful, and a shot by Crooks went wide. After a good run by Crooks where he gave a pass with only one back to beat, and lost possession, the Stoke backs sent their forwards away, and Gribble outplayed the defence tc score with a flick shot.
