Championship Games In the New Zealand Championship the two deciding games were between Severne and Gyles and Dunlop and Scott. In the game between the first two, Gyles played a Sicilian Defence. He developed his game very slowly, but managed to build up an attack which resulted in the winning of a pawn. Nervousness caused him to blunder toward the end and Severne obtained a stalemate. Scott employed the same defence against Dunlop as Gyles had against Severne, and came into the middle game with even prospects. Unsound sacrifices of material by Scott allowed Dunlop to force the win. Championship Roll 1879 H. Hookham Christchurch 1888- A. M. Ollivier Christchurch 1889- H. Hookham Christchurch 1890- R. J.
