OBITUARY

MR CHARLES DAVID FLETT There passed away, on 3rd October, at his residence, Seymour Avenue, Nelson, Mr C. D. Flett, son of the late Mr and Mrs James Flett, who came to New Zealand from the Orkney Island, Scotland. Mr Flett, who was 77 years of age, was born in Lower Moutere and resided there for over 70 years. His extensive orchard was one of the first orchards to be planted in the Nelson district. He retired from active farm work six years ago and went to reside in Nelson. At one time Mr Flett was a director of the Moutere Fruitgrowers’ Association, one of the first, if not the first Fruitgrowers’ Association to be formed in the Dominion. He was also, for a long period, a member of the Lower Moutere School Committee.

Of a most generous and kindly disposition and no good cause was ever refused his help. He was ever ready to give a friendly hand and assistance, where needed; truly one of Nature’s gentlemen and a true type of the early settlers. The possessor of a very retentive memory Mr Flett v/a a good conversationalist, and could recount many interesting stories of the early days of the district. He is survived by his widow, twelve daughters and one son, Mr Gordon Flett, Lower Moutere. The daughters are: Mrs Bunker (Wanganui), Mrs Charles Starnes (Lower Moutere), Miss Sybil Flett (Wellington), Mrs Bogle (Richmond), Mrs Gray (Wellington). Mrs Scaife (Upper Hutt), Mrs Garlick (Upper Hutt), Mrs A. Leagh (Nelson). Mr<= Henman (Petone), Mrs Hannah (Wellington). Mrs Broadman (Napier) and Miss M. Flett (Nelson). There are 18 grandchildren.

The funeral took place at Lower Moutere cemetery and was largely attended. The numerous beautiful wreaths and the many lettei and telegrams of sympathy weic a strong testimony to the respect with which the late Mr Flett was held and the many friends he had made both in Lower Moutere and Nelson.
