WIMBLEDON TENNIS
SURPRISING DEFEAT OF AUSTIN BADLY BEATEN BY AMERICAN PLAYER EDWARDS AND MORTON LOSE IN DOUBLES LONDON. 3rd July. In the English lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon, the American. E T. Cooke, surprisingly annihilated H. W. Austin (Britain) in 45 minutes. He took ten games in a row and did not al- ; low Austin a moment to play a fluent game. Cooke drove and served terrifically. In the fourth round of the women's singles Mrs Little (formerly Miss D. Round) was beaten by Mrs Babyan, of America. Seeded players who survived the round included Mrs Sperling (Denmark), Mrs Fabyan, Miss Siam- | mers (Britain), Miss Jacobs (U.S.A.), Mme. Mathieu (France), and Mile.
Jedrzejowska (Poland). The New Zealand singles champion. Noel Edwards, was eliminated from the men’s doubles. Austin was the only player from the United Kingdom who reached the fifth round and GhaUs Mohammed, of India, the only other British subject. The latter was beaten by Bobby Higgs, of America, and the semi-finalists are Riggs and Henkel (Germany), and Cooke and Puncec (Yugoslavia). None of the men’s singles matches to-day lasted more than three sets and the most games secured by a loser was six. Austin won only four games against Cooke. In the Davis Cup tie between Australia and Mexico the final singles matches resulted:— Quist defeated Hernandez, 11-9, 6-3 6-2. Bromwich defeated Tapia, 6-1, 6-3. 6-1. The Quist-Hernandez match was a battle royal in the first set in which the Mexican led 3-2 and 8-7, after which the Mexican’s lack of resistance showed. He was worn out in the last two sets while Quist was cool, placing his shots beautifully. Hernandez’s service was strong and his backhand excellent. Although his service was still below par Bromwich’s game generally was too strong and accurate for Tapia. The latter was occasionally brilliant, at the net. The attendance totalled 2.500. The Australians left for San Antonio at 8.20 p.m. and will give an exhibition there on Wednesday. They then go to Los Angeles.
