MORE TRAFFIC INSPECTORS
IN NELSON AND MARL BOROUGH DISTRICTS RECOMMENDATION TO TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT BY NO. 11 HIGHWAYS COUNCIL The nerd of more traffic inspect* ors in the .Nelson and Marlborough country districts was stressed by members of (he No. II District Highways Council at the annual meeting to-day and the Transport Department was recommended to increase the inspectors particularly during the summer months. Mr A. H. Gavin (Awatere) moved ’ that the Council recommends to Iho Transport Department the employment of additional traffic inspectors, particularly during the summer months. Mr R. W. Sparrow (Takaka) second--led the motion and expressed the opinion that some suitable local man could br* appointed. He pointed out that with [all the modern facilities of travel and telephones the people in Takaka always .knew when the only Traffic Officer in the district was on his way over the hill. Mr J. Corder said there was a suggestion that the Government take the drivers' license fees from the local bodies and by passing the motion it might strengthen the case of the Government by saying they wanted more , revenue for the additional inspection service required. Mr A. H. Nees said accidents would ‘ occur even if there were three times as many officers. Extra officers could not prevent accidents. The present inspect• ers could be more strict and make more prosecutions. The chairman (Mr T. A. Johnston! : said the amount of activity by inspcc- ; tors was an important factor. In Ncl--1 son the inspector was very active and 1 motorists always had the thought of l Mr C. E. Parkinson in mind when driving in the city. No doubt he had helped considerably in reducing accident* in the city area. I Mr Corder agreed with the chairj man’s remarks.
Mr F. H. Newman (Murchison) supported the motion. He considered there was a need for more inspectors. Murchison did not see an inspector more than once in two months. Mr W. Bullivant said another inspector was necessary in the Nelson country district. On days when there were important fixtures such as A. and P. Shows the inspector was on duty controlling traffic, leaving all the rest the district free for motorists to do a» they wished Mr C. H. Marsh (Colling wood) thought that increased numbers of inspectors would not overcome the difficulty though he agreed more than one was required in the district nov served by Mr J. Brough. The motion was carried.
