£437,132 TO BE EXPENDED

ON NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH HIGHWAYS ESTIMATES APPROVED FOR YEAR . RECONSTRUCTION AND SEALING WORK Estimates providing for a total expenditure of £437,132 on the ( main highways of the Nelson anti Marlborough districts within the next year were approved by the No. 11 District Highways Council at the annual meeting to-day. Tolal £437,132 The total amount expended by the Main Highways Board on the special reconstruction works on State Highways up to 31/3/39 was as follows: Elevation, Para. £3.775: Seddon-Ward £5.423: Rai-Wangamoa, £109.826: Moutere Hill-Motueka, £65.915; Takaka Hill £76,724; Takaka-Onekaka, £9.661; Ko-hatu-Korere. £321; Hope Saddle-Eight Mile. £96.333; O’Sullivans-Frog Flat. (Shenandoah deviation), £6.992- total £374,970.

STATE HIGHWAYS The estimated expenditure on State highways provides for: Wangamoa Valley-Wakapuaka improvements, £36.000 on account; Teal Valley bridge, a 1000; Wakapuaka foreshore protection, £250; new Appleby bridge and approaches, £3OOO on account; Moutere Hill, £4000; Moutere Hill sealing, £11.200, on account; Jubilee bridge construction, £ISOO on account; Takaka liill, £2200; Lindsay’s bridge, £285; Paynes bridge, £4.500 on account; Ta-kaka-Onekaka construction, £2O 000 on account; Tahunanui-Richmond. acquisition of land for widening whole length, £14.000; Wairoa bridge (Brightwater), i aising approaches, £IOO on account; Kohatu-Korere improvements, £6,600; Foxhill-GJenhope, fiood damage and culvert £ 1570: Granity Creek bridge, £2000; widening streets in Murchison, £1.325; widening Fairfax street to Matakitakj bridge, £IOOO on account: Buller Gorge retaining walls, £I2OO on ac» count; fencing of hill roads, £4OOO. MAIN HIGHWAYS Estimated expenditure o:i main highways other than the usual maintenance subsidies included: Collingwood sea erosion protection. £1250 (5-1 grant), Murchison county culverts at Roberts ford, Bastin s ford. Mailman’s creek. Blackwater creek: Murchison-Lewis Pass construction. £24.000 on account. Waimea County—Higgs’ culverts, scaling near Mapua school, £495; sealing near Tapawera school, £360: Fowler’s creek bridge, £I2OO (work in hand). Gentle Annie culvert. £s2B:' Coleman’s creek culvert, £525; Nelson Aerodrome highway, £1000; signposting by Nelson and Marlborough Automobile Associations, £440 and £375 respectively; Appleby overhead bridge and deviation (£7124 (£3363 already expended). work now nearing completion; Brightwater railway crossings, £IOO on recount of work estimated to cost £2124; Bishopdale and Wakatu crossings elimination. £2200 (already expended £5641), work now nearing completion.
