LOWER MOUTERE
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE FIFTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED YESTERDAY’S FUNCTION The Jubilee Hall. Lower Moutere, was gaily decorated with red and green streamers and vases and bowls of holly, this week, the occasion being the fifth birthday celebrations of the Lower Moutere Women's Institute. Mrs E. D. Wilson (president) welcomed the members, friends and visitors from other organisations, expressing pleasure at the large number present. After the singing of the Institute Ode and the Institute song—“ Comrades and Friends” a very interesting programme, arranged for the afternoon, which Included competitions, games and vocal items, was thoroughly enjoyed. The balloon competition resulted in Mrs L. E. Bcrkett being first, Mrs Blazey second, and Mrs Franklin third. An amusing parcel game concluded with Mrs H. Stringer the winner. Mrs J. E. Boyce contributed the solos “Rosebud” and “Love Among the Roses.” A play-reading—“On His Majesty's Service” proved both amusing and entertaining. Parts were taken as follows:—Mrs Mulliner, the postmistress (Mrs Tweedy); Daisy, her daughter (Mrs D. Jones): neighbours, Mrs Dodds (Mrs J. O. Anderson) and Mrs Pitcherly (Mrs Langley); Cynthia Penrose, a city lady (Mrs Stilwell); hotel proprietress (Mrs Cowin).
In the Lucky Spot waltzes prizes went to Mesdames Harding and C. Starnes and Mrs Mcßryaie and Miss Patricia Wilson. Prior to the dispensing of afternoon tea Mrs Wilson lit the five candles on the handsome birthday cake, iced and decorated in red and green, the Lower Moutere Institute colours. The candles were blown out by Mrs Cowin, and the cake cut by Mrs Tweedy (Federation President). In proffering her congratulations, on behalf of the Federation, Mrs Tweedy referred back to the establishment of the Lower Moutere Institute five years ago and its struggle for existence at the commencement. To-day this Institute was, she said, one of the most progressive, and she wished it continued prosperity. Mrs Wilson said that members were proud to think they were celebrating their Institute’s fifth birthday, and, in connection with the party, which she hoped all had enjoyed, she desired lo specially thank Mrs Mcßrydie for making and icing the birthday cake. Congratulations and birthday greetings were extended to Lower Moutere by Mrs Stephens (Ngatimoti Women’s Institute), Mrs L. Cowin (Motueka Women’s Institute), Mrs Berkett (HopeRanzau), Mrs L. Inwood (Motueka Women’s Division) and Mrs A. R. Franklin (Moutere Women’s Division). It was announced that the goose had been won by Mrs J. O. Anderson, and the mystery parcel by Mrs Tweedy. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a very enjoyable and successful birthday party.
