Andrus (U.S.A.), 6-3, 6-0. Mrs R. Mathieu (France) defeated Mrs M. R. King (Britain), 6-1, 6-0. The defeat of W. D. McNeill (U.S.A.) by the Yugoslavian player F. Kukuljevic, Is a major upset, for McNeill, who was recently successful in the Fiench championships in both singles and doubles events, was third in the Wimbledon seedings. Another surprise was the defeat of the seeded player It. Menzel by the American E. Smith.
