DEATH OF SHIP’S WATCHMAN
' EVIDENCE AT INQUEST WELLINGTON, 28th June. • A verdict that Edmund Francis Glavjin ship's watchman, met his death jon the Maunganui on 17th June ! through bein,T poisoned by hydroj cyanic ac •! following fumigation on ; the. ship was returned by the Coroner, j Mr Stilwcll, at the inquest to-day. j Evidence was given by the torcman, John Clarence Adams, that deceased ; had been told to leave the ship before operations started, that the ship was inspected before the charges were : set, that an inquiry was made about the watchman, and that the foreman was j told that the watchman had left. He wis again told this when a check was made ; of all men after > barges were set off. i Robert Walker vaid that while in- ! specting the slVip (*Tore the charges j were set off he eftt: across a watcii- ' man locked in a cabin leading to the j well deck. It was locked on the inside. The man might have had some liquor but he was not drunk. On being told that the ship was ready to be fumieated the watchman said, ‘right O: I'll go up.’ Witness went on w 111 his job and saw the man outside the cabin door.
