CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS
THREE FINALS REACHED PENN WINS TWO MATCHES (United Press Association! PALMERSTON N., 27th January. Orthodox but stylish play was seen in the Dominion croquet championships, which were continued in Palmerston North to-day in fine and overcast weather. Good progress has been made in all events , and the tournament will finish either next Tuesday or Wednesday. The finals of three events were reached to-day, Mrs Hill (Feilding) playing splendid croquet to beat Mrs McCreath (Gore) in two games. In the first gatne in particular, the players put up a good exhibition, Mrs Hill having the better run of play. She was right on top in the second game. Double success came to Penn (Christchurch). who beat Bryan (Wellington) and McClymont (Wanganui) respectively in the first and second life finals of the men’s championship. Bryan strongly contested every stroke in one of the hardest games of the tournament, but McClymont failed to get going against a superior tactician and player. Results:— WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP First Life Semi-finals: Mrs Morgan beat Mrs McLeod. 26-20; Mrs Watkins beat Mrs Telfer, 26-7. Second Life Third round: Mrs McLeod beat Mrs Baker. 26-21. CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES Third round: Gibbs and Mrs Clark beat Ross and Mrs Watkins. 26-21; Mrs Simpson and Mrs Watkins beat Mrs Frost and Mrs Manssen. 26-19; McCreath and Mrs Wilson beat Mrs Petrie and Mrs Brown. 26-19 LEVEL SINGLES Final: Mrs Hill (Feilding) beat Mrs McCreath (Gore). 26-17. 26-12 MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP Tirst Life Final: Penn (Christchurch) beat Bryan (Wellington). 26-24.
