JUNIOR CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS

MAITAI V. HOSPITAL In a junior A. grade championship match played at Stoke on Saturday, Maitai gained four more points by defeating Hospital by the margin of 103 runs in the first innings. Maitai won the toss and sent Hospital in to bat first, Hospital scoring the total of 78 runs, the best scores being McMurray 15, Vercoe 21, and Thomas 13. Bowling for Maitai, R. Goodman took three wickets for 33 runs, and G. Taylor took seven wickets for 16 runs. Maitai then had their innings, and knocked up a score of 181 runs. Townsend was the opening batsman, and batting very brightly scored 58 runs. Gamboni 17, Burn 39 and Taylor 26 not out, were the best scores of the other batsmen. Bowling for Hosptal, Muntz took two wickets for 56 runs, Vercoe three for 34, Thomas three for 25, Caples one for 10, and McMurray one for 27. ATHLETIC AND OLD BOYS DRAW Playing at the Botanies, Athletic held Old Boys to a draw, Athletic’s last man being in when stumps were drawn.

Old Boys won the toss and elected to bat. Thompson was bowling well for Athletic and when rain held up play. Old Boys had lost five wickets for 60. Pyne and Green then played very steadily to take the score well past the 100. Richards then helped with a very bright 31 and Old Boys declared with eight wickets for 184. Green made 54, Pyne 31, Richards 31, Gaffney 25, Griffiths 14, Falconer 15. Bowling for Athletic, Thompson took four wickets for 36, Gibbs one for 6, Hill one for 96. Moore and Gibbs opened for Athletic. Gibbs scored freely until he played a kicking ball on to his wicket. Edwards was the only other Athletic batsman to score doulihe figures, but with Moore playing carefully Athletic finally held up until time. Moore carried his bat right through for 38, while Gibbs scored 33 and Edwards 26. Gaffney took four for 39, and Pyne four for 25.
