! FRENCH GASTRONOMES GIVB RULES NO TALKING, EXCEPT ABOUT FOOD lßy Air Mail—Special Correspondent] LONDON, 24th December. The French take eating seriously. Here are some rules for the enjoyment of meals drawn up by the Association of Gastronomes in Pans. First of the “Gastronomic Commandments” is: “Never dance or smoke while eating.” To do either is regarded as a sin against the ciief. Both dancing and smoking, however are recommended once coffee is served at the end of the meal—but not one moment before. "Waiters must keep completely silent during a meal” *s another commandment. 1 lie Association adds that it does not consider it “improper” for the host and his guests lo converse as they desire—but their talk must be restricted to the menu or food generally. The food and wines should be served s) that their savours mount in crescendo, like n musical orchestration, to a climax . . . the greatest dish coming last. Filially, the proper time for serving cheese lias been set down as "before the dessert.” Copies of the commandments arc being distributed all over France.
