CONTROL OF IMPORTS

CANNED FOODSTUFFS NO INCREASE IN PRICE SO FAR [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, 20th January. Questioned about a published statement that wholesale merchants had increased the price of canned foodstuffs by 5 per cent., because of a shortage of supplies caused by the import restrictions, a representative of a Wellington firm which imports grocery supplies, said that the statement was without foundation. He said that because restrictions had been placed on the importation of canned and dried fruits, an eventual rise in price was likely, but up to the present, no change had been made. There had been an increase in the wholesale price of tinned salmon and sardines, but in each case the increase was in no viy concerned with the import restrictions.
