DESTROYED BY FIRE
NINE-ROOMED HOUSE AT MATAWHERO CONTENTS PACKED FOR REMOVAL fUnited Preßß Association] GISBORNE, This Day. With all its contents packed ready for removal from the district, a nineroomed house at Matawhero was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The occupier, Mr Alfred Jones and his family, left the house at 9 p.m. to stay with friends in Gisborne prior to leaving this morning for the Bay of Plenty. Returning at 6 o’clock yesterday morning to complete the packing, Mr Jones discovered that the house and its contents had been destroyed.
When the fire was discovered shortly before midnight on Saturday the flames had a strong hold on the old wooden structure, and no water being available nothing could be done to stem their progress. For a time the Matawhero Hotel and a store on the opposite corner appeared to be in some danger and the occupants of these premises experienced some anxiety until the flames burned themselves out. The Jones’s furniture and effects were insured for £250, but the insurance on the building is unknown.
