VOYAGE IN JUNK
9000 MILES TO EXPOSE! lON OVER ROUTE OF CLIPPER SHIPS SAN FRANCISCO, 12th October. Richard Halliburton, explorer and author, whose book, “Royal Road to Romance,” some years ago captivated American youngsters and adults alike, has left San Francisco to start one of the most intriguing exploits he has ever conceived—a trip in a Chinese junk across the Pacific Ocean from China to Treasure Island, site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition.
To add a tremendous dramatic contrast to his venture, Halliburton has made arrangements to sail the junk directly over the route of Pan-American Airways’ Clipper ships. This is in contrast with the ancient traditional route of the junks, which for hundreds of years have sailed to the western American coasts by the northern circle route, keeping close to land all the way. Halliburton says the junk, which he has decided to name "Sea Dragon.” will be painted bright yellow and green The trip will approximate 9000 miles, and Halliburton estimates the running itme at from 12 to 13 weeks. Thus, the Clipper planes will pass him twelve or thirteen times on weekly crossings.
